§ 01The four seats

Four seats. One bench. Every side of the case.

David Schnall has handled family cases from four different seats: for the City, for the defense, for the child and for private clients. That is how he understands how judges think, how ACS builds a case, and what the court means by “the child’s best interests.”

Seat 01 / 04 · For the City

Attorney for the City of New York

Child-welfare litigation

He litigated child-welfare cases for the City of New York. He is fully versed in ACS proceedings, child protection investigations and every aspect of child welfare litigation, so he knows how the agency builds its case, from the inside.

Seat 02 / 04 · For the defense

Public defender, NYC Family Court

2002–2012

Ten years as a public defender in New York City Family Court. Case after case at the defense table taught him what a person facing that court is up against, and what it takes to push back.

Seat 03 / 04 · For the child

Court-appointed counsel for children

10+ years

More than a decade as the lawyer the court appoints to represent the child (and, in some cases, adults) in Family Court. He knows what a judge listens for when a child’s future is decided, and what “the child’s best interests” means in practice.

Seat 04 / 04 · For you

Private family-law advocate

33 years · 1,000+ clients

Clients in every NYC Family Court, in New York State Supreme Court and in federal court (the Southern District of New York). Everything the other three seats taught him goes into this one: yours.

Whichever seat the other side takes, he has sat in it.

The numbers side of your case

A degree in finance and accounting, at the counsel table.

Child support and divorce turn on income, imputation, support calculations and the division of assets. David Schnall brings a degree in finance and accounting to those numbers, and argues them like a litigator.

§ 04Philosophy

Optimize your presentation. Maximize your possibilities.

The firm’s motto isn’t branding. It’s the order in which every case is worked: optimized before it’s presented, so the outcome can be maximized.

01 / 03

Optimize

Documents, finances, timelines and testimony are organized before anything is filed, because in family court, cases are won in the preparation.

02 / 03

Present

Every appearance is argued from a prepared position, in whichever court your matter calls for. The goal is a presentation the court finds credible and the other side has to take seriously.

03 / 03

Maximize

The best outcome at an honest cost. When settling serves you, settle on strong terms. When it doesn’t, try the case, prepared.

Blunt honesty

You hear the truth about your case, including when a fight isn’t worth what it would cost, and when not to litigate at all.

Affordable excellence

Powerful and effective family law representation at an affordable price: exceptional value, fairly priced.

§ 05Free consultation

§ 06Client reviews

If I could give Attorney David Schnall 10 stars on this review I would. He's cut throat like a vulture. He cares, he goes above and beyond. He is professional and responsive. He is knowledgable and knows his stuff when it comes to the law. He will not let people of lawlessness step all over your rights. He's very affordable, … He is blunt, and straightforward and will tell you like it is. …

David defended me with ACS having a founded incident on my record. He was able to have it removed and records sealed. What moved me the most with him is that he fights for you as someone who really personally cares and not just as a lawyer on another job.

§ 07Straight answers

About David: straight answers.

Where he trained, where he practices, and what the free consultation covers.

He earned his J.D. at New York University School of Law in 1991, after a B.A. in finance and accounting at the University of Florida in 1987. He was admitted to the New York Bar on February 1, 1993, in the Appellate Division, First Judicial Department, and to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York in 1994.

He has represented clients in the Family Courts of Queens, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Bronx and Richmond (Staten Island) counties, in the matrimonial parts of New York State Supreme Court, and in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, where he was admitted in 1994. The firm’s principal office is in Midtown Manhattan, with a second office in Jamaica, Queens.

A lawyer the court appoints to represent the child, called the attorney for the child. In some Family Court cases, including neglect and abuse cases, the court must appoint one; in others, such as many custody and visitation cases, it may. David Schnall served as court-appointed counsel for children for more than ten years, which is why he knows how the court weighs a child’s best interests.

It helps with the numbers a family case turns on. Child support, maintenance and the division of property depend on income, what income can be imputed, the support calculation and the value of what a couple owns. David Schnall holds a degree in finance and accounting and brings it to the financial side of your case.

David Schnall will show you how to achieve your goals, how your case will unfold, how long it will take, and the estimated costs. It is free, virtual (by video or phone), confidential and carries no obligation. Calling or writing does not create an attorney-client relationship.

Suspension was solely due to a personal tax issue with New York State and had nothing to do with the practice of law. This firm has represented over one thousand clients and there has never been a complaint from a client and no discipline has ever been administered as result of representation of a client.
